Driving assistant mode helps you complete actions while driving. With your voice, you can read and send messages, make calls, and control the media. When you're finished editing the settings, tap the Maps icon at the bottom center of the screen to return to Google Maps. Available for most Android devices, driving mode is something developed for those who like to use their devices as a multimedia and navigation center while driving.
Even if you receive an incoming text message or call, Google Assistant can read it for you without interrupting the navigation screen. If you're already in driving mode, first tap the apps icon at the bottom right of the screen and then open the settings from there. When you start Google Assistant driving mode, you'll notice that it has three icons at the bottom of the screen. In short, apps compatible with driving mode are limited to calls, messages, Google Maps and multimedia content (Spotify, VLC, YouTube Music, podcasts, etc.).
If you haven't received the note, Google has replaced the Android Auto app with Google Assistant driving mode. Also note that Google Assistant driving mode is only available in English, even if Google Assistant is configured in another language. While Google Assistant's driving mode may not be the perfect substitute for Android Auto, it can certainly be an option for you if you need a simple user interface that works for driving. In addition, the driving mode settings give you the option to allow or ignore incoming calls and text notifications while driving.
The first option, when navigating on Google Maps, is one that I recommend activating if you discover that Google Assistant's driving mode works for you. As long as you have a reasonably up-to-date Android smartphone, you can use driving mode in Google Assistant and you don't need to download it through the Play Store as Android Auto. You can even use Google Assistant by saying the keywords: “Hello, Google”, or by clicking the Assistant icon at the bottom. Not to mention that Google has discontinued Android Auto for phone screens and replaced it with Google Assistant driving mode.
That's because you don't need to mirror your smartphone screen to the vehicle's infotainment screen if you're using Google Assistant's driving mode. Because driving mode is run by Google Assistant, you'll find it in the Assistant settings, rather than on the device's configuration page.
